COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Snow fell throughout the Capital Region Saturday night causing many Colonie residents to head to local hardware stores to try and prepare. Most of the residents said they were looking for one thing — rock salt.
“I’m looking for salt today,” said Thomas Tidd, a Colonie resident.
“I went all over to look for salt, nobody have it. I went to Walmart, I went to Crossgates,” said Salah Al Saedi, an Albany resident.
Hatchet Hardware of Colonie Manager Danny Uruchima said rock salt and calcium were the top commodities of Saturday afternoon.
“Right now a lot of people are high demand for calcium for concrete but that’s been hard to get and we got 18 packs two days ago and they sold out in less than an hour,” said Uruchima.
“No one has it right now at all, I’m surprised that even the trucks still do which is nice I mean, I’m grateful for it,” said Tidd.
This struggle comes as the entire state is experiencing a salt shortage, stopping many companies from being able to meet the high demands of storms, like the one on Saturday.
“This is the first time that we’re dealing with something like this, we’ve always had a stock and this came out of nowhere,” said Uruchima.
“Yeah, I’m crossing my fingers to see if there’s any salt around, but not banking on it,” said Kevin Marvin, an Albany resident.
As the snow continued to cover the roads Saturday night, some residents worried about their own driveways, without salt.
“It is frustrating, yeah, because you can’t really get much anywhere and if you’re not on top of the shovel and everything like that or even if you are, with all the rain we’re getting its still going to freeze over and you can’t shovel rain,” said Tidd.
“Yeah, for me I just bought a house so I’m trying to keep it nice while I can,” said Marvin.
Even without rock salt, Uruchima said there are other ways people can stay prepared for this weekend’s storm.
“I think [something] they’re not thinking about right now too is getting their ice scrapers, because its going to start turning icy once it gets cold, make sure you guys get your ice scrapers, windshield washer fluids for your cars,” said Uruchima.
Uruchima said he’s hoping to have a restock of rock salt and calcium by 2 p.m. Sunday.
