X is actively working to connect with users interested in acquiring user handles that have been reclaimed from inactive accounts. Reports from Forbes indicate that the company has even begun sending solicitation emails, offering these handles for a flat fee of $50,000 to initiate a purchase. Back in May, Elon Musk announced that X, previously known as Twitter, would implement a strategy to purge accounts that have gone dormant and hinted at plans to recycle these disused handles to maximize their value.
According to emails reviewed by Forbes, X has established a dedicated task force called the “@Handle Team” that is focused on creating a marketplace for purchasing handles associated with inactive accounts. This year, X has updated its policies, mandating that users must log in every 30 days to maintain account activity. Users who fail to log in within this timeframe risk having their accounts suspended or permanently removed. However, the exact duration of inactivity required for account deletion remains unclear. After NPR exited the platform last spring, Musk began threatening to reassign its handle just weeks later.
Currently, acquiring an inactive handle from another user does not appear to be accessible to just anyone. X’s official website still states that it cannot release inactive usernames. Nonetheless, the Forbes article suggests that the company is exploring the possibility of a handle marketplace as a new revenue stream from its user base. Recently, X launched two new subscription tiers aimed at monetizing its services: a $16 per month Premium+ tier and a more affordable $3 per month basic tier.
