TOWN OF OXFORD, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Today is the last day of February, which marks the last day of children’s dental health month.
Progressive Dental has been sending hygienists to local elementary schools to educate kids about the best practices to keep a healthy mouth.
Today, Progressive stopped by Oxford Primary School and gave an interactive presentation.
The students were shown how to properly floss and brush their teeth, which means at least twice a day for two minutes at a time.
Students also read off health facts such as how much sugar is in a bottle of soda.
Dentist Noor Rehman says the sooner kids understand how to maintain their mouth health, the better.
“All of these kids are probably six or older now, and they are starting to get their permanent teeth. So, it’s really important to take care of those cause their baby teeth may fall out, but their permanent teeth are going to be with them for their whole life. Kids at this age are starting to brush their teeth on their own, not necessarily having their parents aid them. So it’s important that they learn that they are hitting all their teeth, brushing all sides of their teeth,” said Rehman.
Each students walked away with a goodie bag which included a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.
Progressive Dental says you should be using a new toothbrush roughly every three months.
This month alone, it has educated over 2,600 students across Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Susquehanna Counties.
