BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – To celebrate a regional organizations’ 75th anniversary, its partners are doing 75 different service projects across their communities.
The Arc New York is celebrating 75 years in business, and to commemorate that, ACHIEVE, which is an affiliated chapter of The Arc, is helping out at local non-profits.
ACHIEVE services those in our community with developmental or intellectual disabilities. One of the 75 acts of service taking place across The Arc’s footprint, happened at the Broome County Humane Society. Folks from ACHIEVE cleaned up the garden area in front of the building, dropped off donations, and got to interact with some of the animals.
The Therapeutic Rec Coordinator with ACHIEVE, Sam Barbera says that ACHIEVE has been volunteering at the Humane Society every week since January.
“Ever since the weather broke, we’ve started doing some stuff outside. We help clean out their flower beds, we help clean up the dog runs, and it provides meaningful activity for our folks as well. And it also offers them a chance to learn a skill that maybe they didn’t know before. They enjoy doing it and they’re with their friends,” said Barbera.
Prior to helping out at the Humane Society, people from ACHIEVE also volunteered at the Ross Park Zoo, helping with cleanup.
The Arc New York is dedicated to supporting the inclusion of those with disabilities.
The Arc says that over its 75 years, it has created 35 affiliated chapters that have helped over 60,000 people.
