Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has declared that the United States is unlikely to succeed in an upcoming arms race against Moscow. Ryabkov’s comments reflect a strong stance on Russia’s military capabilities amidst rising tensions.
In an interview with the state-run media outlet Izvestia, Ryabkov stated, “If the U.S. expects to win another arms race … then the Americans are mistaken.” He emphasized that Russia will not succumb to provocations, which he characterized as typical of American foreign policy aimed at Russia. Instead, Ryabkov assured that Russia will ensure its national security through robust military strategies and alliances.
Despite facing international isolation since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has managed to maintain alliances that bolster its military capabilities. Notably, Iran has supplied Shahed drones to Russia, while North Korea has reportedly sent over 1,000,000 artillery shells to support Moscow’s military efforts. Additionally, China has contributed by providing weapons and military equipment, further enhancing Russia’s arsenal.
Furthermore, Russia’s withdrawal from critical arms control agreements, such as the New START Treaty with the United States and the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), underscores its shift towards a more aggressive military posture. Ryabkov pointed out that the current geopolitical climate has led to a reevaluation of these treaties.
During his conversation with Izvestia, Ryabkov also indicated that there are currently no intentions to replace the New START Treaty, implying that Russia is not looking to re-engage in arms reduction discussions at this time. This decision reflects a broader strategy to prioritize military readiness and strengthen defense capabilities in the face of perceived threats.
