BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – It’s Women’s Equality Day, and several women-lead organizations rallied behind State Senator Lea Webb in front of the federal building in Binghamton.
On this day in 1920, the United States government ratified the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote.
To celebrate the occasion, multiple local groups, including Eleanor’s Legacy, Planned Parenthood, Family Planning, New York Federation of Democratic Women and others, all endorsed Senator Webb ahead of the November election.
Webb is the Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee, and says New York needs to be proud that it’s a sanctuary state for reproductive rights.
“It is my hope, and my call to action for everyone that is here in our community and our state, to come together to endure that reproductive rights are a part of our state constitution. That it is protected, that it is not subjected to political football,” says Webb.
Webb says maternal mortality rates in New York are very high, and she’s working in the senate to address a a shortage of maternal health care across the state.
Webb’s supporters were showing off signs and T-shirts, promoting her re-election.
Webb is slated to face off against Republican Mike Sigler in the general election on November 5th.
