BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local Democratic leader has died.
According to public officials, former Assembly Majority Leader Jim Tallon passed away on June 9. He was 82 years old.
In a press release from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, he discussed Tallon’s commitment to serving the community:
“I was heartbroken to learn of the passing of former Assembly Majority Leader James Tallon today. James deeply understood that healthcare needed to be accessible and affordable, and spent his years in public office fighting to ensure care for our most vulnerable. James was a true public servant and his loss to our state is tremendous. I would like to extend my condolences to his family and pray for their comfort and healing during this time.”
In a press release from Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, she calls Tallon a “role model”:
“Jim Tallon was a giant. He represented our area for many years serving with dignity and distinction. He was a role model and mentor to me, especially in my early years in the Assembly. Jim taught me what it means to be a true public servant. I’ll be forever grateful for his wise counsel.”
Tallon served in the New York State Assembly for 19 years. He served as the Majority Leader from 1987 to 1993. He was also a member of the state Board of Regents for several years.
Following his career in politics, Tallon went on to become a health care consultant with the United Hospital Fund in New York City.
