Yesterday, Prime Video unveiled an exciting and comprehensive preview of its upcoming Fallout series. This adaptation draws inspiration from the iconic RPG franchise developed by Interplay and Bethesda, and it remarkably captures the essence of the original video games. The creators have crafted this series as a fresh take that embodies the spirit of what fans have come to expect, effectively positioning it as their vision of Fallout 5.
During a roundtable discussion at CCXP, showrunner Graham Wagner emphasized the team’s approach to treating this series as a significant continuation within the Fallout universe. Wagner, along with executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, as well as co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet, aimed to ensure the series resonates with both newcomers and loyal fans by maintaining the franchise’s core essence. Instead of crafting a singular protagonist, they have chosen to weave a narrative through three distinct characters: Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, who is the daughter of Vault 33’s Overseer on a quest through the remnants of Los Angeles; Maximus, portrayed by Aaron Moten, a member of the enigmatic Brotherhood of Steel; and Walton Goggins as a centuries-old Ghoul and fugitive hunter.
Nolan pointed out that in the games, players have the freedom to shape their Vault Dweller character to fit the narrative, a concept that doesn’t easily translate to the screen. To creatively adapt this idea, the producers devised a clever strategy by utilizing the three main characters to reflect the intricate RPG mechanics of the games. They drew inspiration from Sergio Leone’s classic film, The Good, The Bad, & the Ugly, to enrich their storytelling. “By placing these characters in vastly different corners of the Fallout universe, we were able to capture the ambition and complexity of the games,” he explained. “This approach allows us to explore themes of morality and the nuanced gray areas that define the franchise, presenting a distinct narrative style.”
Although Fallout 76 celebrated its five-year anniversary in mid-November, fans have been waiting since 2015’s Fallout 4 for a single-player experience. It might take several years before a genuine Fallout 5 is released, so depending on the timing of that game’s launch and the duration of the show, Wagner and his team’s decision to treat this series as another mainline installment may prove to be a strategic move.
Fallout launches on Prime Video on April 12, 2024.
