On February 15, 2022, just days before Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, legislation aimed at advancing the IRIS² project was introduced. This initiative was prompted by a cyber attack that compromised the KA-SAT network, utilized by the Ukrainian military for operational coordination. This incident starkly illustrated the urgent necessity for establishing a secure, EU-managed communication network, reinforcing the importance of resilience against cyber threats in military operations.
“Ultimately, ensuring high-quality space connectivity has become a fundamental requirement from both security and defense perspectives,” stated Hervé Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space, the company involved in developing the new system. He pointed out that the war in Ukraine has vividly demonstrated the vulnerabilities associated with relying on external allies for communication infrastructure. The ongoing conflict has revealed that European nations must develop their own secure and reliable communication systems to ensure their sovereignty and safety in an increasingly unpredictable global landscape.
