This year, the esteemed Commissioner Filippo Grandi presented the prestigious international award to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a remarkable ceremony. He commended her extraordinary vision, unwavering courage, and steadfast commitment to humanitarianism, highlighting her pivotal role in welcoming over 1.2 million refugees and asylum seekers to Germany between 2015 and 2016. This period coincided with the height of the ongoing Syrian conflict, which has caused immense suffering and displacement.
“You demonstrated an ethical compass which not only guided your work and the actions of your nation, but it showed the way for so many of us in Europe and across the globe,” Grandi stated, emphasizing the profound impact of her leadership during such challenging times.
Championing a Vision of Openness and Humanity
During her heartfelt acceptance speech, Ms. Merkel articulated her firm rejection of the selfish instincts of those who possess “cold hearts,” advocating for a Germany that welcomes diversity rather than restricts it. She passionately asserted, “What is essential is a future for the nation to be self-confident and free,” emphasizing the importance of a Germany that is “open to other human beings…[and] can succeed if we do our best.”
The former Chancellor expressed her belief that this award also serves as an honor for all individuals who have bravely faced the responsibilities that lie ahead in such turbulent times. “My gratitude goes primarily to all those people,” she concluded, recognizing the collective efforts of many in ensuring a compassionate response to the refugee crisis.
Celebrating Global Humanitarian Efforts
In addition to Merkel, four regional winners were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes worldwide. These individuals and groups exemplify the spirit of resilience and commitment in the face of adversity.
The recipient for Africa was the all-volunteer Mbera Fire Brigade from Mauritania, a courageous group dedicated to combating wildfires. They have successfully extinguished over 100 bushfires while planting thousands of trees to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
From the Americas, Vicenta González was honored for her nearly 50 years of dedicated service to displaced and vulnerable populations. Her work, including support for a cacao cooperative in Costa Rica, has significantly aided refugees and women in host communities, particularly survivors of domestic violence.
In the Asia and Pacific region, the humanitarian organization Meikswe Myanmar has provided essential support to communities in need, including internally displaced persons. Their efforts encompass distributing emergency supplies, healthcare, education, and livelihood assistance.
For the Middle East and North Africa, Iraqi gynecologist Nagham Hasan was recognized for her invaluable medical and psychosocial care provided to Yazidi women and girls who have endured severe persecution, enslavement, and gender-based violence.
Each year, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award, named after the renowned Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, and the first High Commissioner for Refugees, Fridtjof Nansen, honors individuals, groups, or organizations that have gone above and beyond their duty to protect refugees, internally displaced persons, or stateless individuals. This recognition highlights the critical need for ongoing support and advocacy for those affected by displacement.
