ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany County district attorney found himself in the center of a controversy, and it centered around a bonus he gave himself.
As first reported by The Times Union, District Attorney David Soares took state grant money and used it to give himself and some staff members 11 percent bonuses in December. In Soares’s case, that meant an extra $22,000 in addition to his $200,000 salary.
Some in the county have called for Soares to resign. He released a video statement on Monday and said the issue has become a distraction, so he plans to give the money back to the county.
