Access Controller from PlayStation Arrives by Christmas for $90

Sony’s venture into innovative gaming technology has always been characterized by its unique approach to design. Unlike many competitors who label their buttons simply as “A” or “B,” Sony has embraced a distinctive identity by incorporating “X” and “O” buttons in the original PlayStation controller. Now, the gaming giant is set to launch a revolutionary new controller design—a large, flat circle equipped with customizable buttons—crafted to provide one of the most accessible interfaces available in the console gaming market. This thoughtful design aims to cater to a broader audience, ensuring that every gamer can enjoy their favorite titles with ease.

On Thursday, Sony’s VP of hardware and peripherals, Isabelle Tomatis, announced exciting news regarding the long-anticipated “Access” controller. Scheduled for release on December 6, this innovative device will be priced at $90, making it a competitive option compared to the standard DualSense controller, which retails for just $20 less, and significantly more affordable than Sony’s premium $200 Edge controller. Preorders for this highly sought-after controller are set to commence on July 21, allowing eager gamers to secure their unit ahead of the launch.

The Access controller is designed specifically as an accessibility-first solution, aimed at gamers who have struggled with the traditional dual-stick control layout. This adaptable device features eight ports that can accommodate up to 19 different button caps included in the package. Many of these caps are purpose-built for enhanced accessibility, such as large flat caps and other extended options. For example, one of the included caps can cover two button slots, allowing users to customize their experience by mixing and matching labels to correspond with their unique in-game controller mappings.

Additionally, the controller features a versatile joystick that can extend from the body of the Access controller itself. It comes with three different cap options—rounded, standard, and dome-shaped—enabling players to choose the configuration that feels most comfortable for them. Users will have the ability to switch between different controller profiles via an external button on the Access controller, as well as the option to create and save up to 30 unique control profiles and adjust additional settings directly on the PS5 console.

The Access controller also incorporates three 3.5 mm AUX ports designed to support external devices, such as additional joysticks or buttons. While Sony has yet to release details regarding any compatible external accessories, the universal nature of the 3.5 mm AUX port suggests that third-party developers will likely create a variety of useful attachments for the Access controller. Furthermore, Sony confirmed that users can connect two Access controllers along with a DualSense controller to facilitate collaborative gameplay, enhancing the social aspect of gaming.

Sony’s commitment to accessibility in gaming has piqued our interest since the unveiling of the Access controller for PlayStation 5 earlier this year. Initially referred to as “Project Leonardo,” the company has collaborated with various gaming accessibility organizations to ensure that the controller meets the needs of all players. Notably, the device includes a port for an AMPS-compatible mount on its underside, which allows it to be securely attached to a wheelchair, providing a practical solution for gamers with limited mobility.

The Access controller represents a significant advancement in gaming accessibility and is a welcome addition to Sony’s lineup, particularly after recent disappointments with other peripherals. The recently announced return to PlayStation handhelds essentially mirrors a DualSense controller equipped with a display for remote play. In contrast, the Access controller stands out as a truly distinctive device, placing Sony ahead of competitors striving to make the gaming world more inclusive. Although we have yet to assess its durability, the Access controller marks an ambitious step toward mainstreaming accessibility in the expansive universe of video games.
